The Mandolin in Vietnam : with Quynh Nhu Nguyen

Born in Ho Chi Minh City (20th May, 1983), Nguyen Song Quynh Nhu is a Vietnamese Mandolinist.

Nhu showed an aptitude for the mandolin at the age of 4 when she was in kindergaten.
Her teacher at kindergarten who was also a mandolin player found that Nhu could memorize music so well to play simple songs for children on a mandolin after a short time.
Her teacher encouraged her to take an exam at the Conservatory.
Nhu passed the entrance exam of the Ho Chi Minh City's Conservatory of Music in 1990 and graduated with honor in 2003.

So it's been 30 years since the first time she fell in love with the sound of mandolin. Though mandolin is not popular in Vietnam, Nhu still has great passion for this instrument and want to connect with mandolin players all over the world.

How did you meet the mandolin?

I showed an aptitude for the mandolin at the age of 4. My teacher at kindergarten who was also a mandolin player found that I could memorize music so well to play simple songs for children on a mandolin after a short time. I passed the entrance exam of the Ho Chi Minh city's Conservatory of Music when I turned 6.
So it's been 30 years since the first time I fell in love with the sound of mandolin.

How is your activity organized around the mandolin?

There is no mandolin orchestra in Vietnam. Therefore, after I graduated from the Ho Chi Minh city's Conservatory of Music, I became a Music Teacher.
I also teach Mandolin for a 16-year-old boy at home. Beside that, I always look for opportunities to connect with Mandolin Players all over the world.
So I often join some Art Festivals held in Southest Asia countries.

What is the position of the mandolin currently in your country?
Have many mandolin players ? People know our instrument ?


In fact, mandolin is not popular in Vietnam at this time.
It is usually mistaken for ukulele or guitar.
There are about 30 mandolin players.

What is the most played repertoire in your country?

Czardas, Flots du Danube (J. Ivanovici), Those were the days.

Where is the mandolin taught?

From the year 1990 to 2000, mandolin courses were held at the Ho Chi Minh city's Conservatory of Music.
After that, there is no more Mandolin course because this instrument is not so popular in Vietnam.

If you had to choose a word that represents or defines the mandolin, which would it be?

It would be “PEACEFUL”.

I love the warm sound of my Mandolin.
Whenever I play, I can feel peace in my mind.
